Dentons Davis Brown president and immigration attorney Lori Chesser appeared on The Iowa Podcast, discussing this question: “Can President Trump End Birthright Citizenship?” Politics aside, the discussion focuses on the mechanics of current laws and their broader implications.

President Trump’s executive order, titled “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship” opens up a dialogue and is likely to be challenged in court for years to come. The 14th Amendment grants U.S. citizenship to people born here when they are “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” The debate centers on these 5 words.
